There are campus resources for a range of videography and audio services including creative videos, event recordings and closed captioning.

Creating accessible Media

Adding captions to videos provides equal access to those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Oregon State has a contract with 3PlayMedia, a transcript service for employees to use. The company creates the transcript and captioning files, which you can then upload to YouTube or MediaSpace.

For short videos being posted to YouTube, you can also upload a transcript of the text for captions or edit the automatic captions produced by YouTube, but always ensure to proofread automatic captions. If you need help editing the automatic captions provided by Youtube, follow these instructions.

Zoom automatically adds recordings to MediaSpace; you can caption these videos or upload other videos to caption using Kaltura. Follow these instructions to add captions to videos using Kaltura. Like YouTube, you can use MediaSpace to share a link to your video or to embed a video into your website.

Kaltura

Kaltura is Oregon State University’s video delivery platform. You can access this tool through MediaSpace and Canvas. Some recordings are automatically placed into Kaltura, including Zoom recordings. You can also upload recordings to MediaSpace or record a video using Kaltura. Plus, through Kaltura, you can make edits to your video or add captions. model release forms

The university requires individuals to sign a model release form when they are featured in videos, including all Oregon State faculty, staff and students. Read below for information on model release forms. 

  • As a general guide, if you’re taking a video focused on a single person or a small group and they’re the main focus of your shot, have them complete and sign a model release form. For information on ways to approach taking videos of large groups, visit the Contracts and Model Releases page of the university's branding guidelines. 
  • You can download and print model release forms or use Docusign to gather model release forms digitally. Visit beav.es/model to initiate the model release form process using Docusign; detailed instructions are available on the branding site. 

Student videography

Consider the following recommendations to support positive and reciprocal relationship building when taking student videos. Review the division's photography and videography guidelines for more information.  

  • Sharing stories and perspectives from historically underrepresented students is both important and a highly nuanced endeavor. Approach this work with care and in a manner that uplifts student voices and experiences.
  • Do not take, share with other units or publish video content of students without consent.
  • Staff and student workers who are taking or recording student images and retaining this multimedia content with personally identifiable information should have FERPA training.
